Viennese Coffeehouses
Coffee - Der Kaffee

First, I know that I am jumping around and talking about different locations. We are currently home in Zürich, so don't think I jumped back on the train to head to Vienna. (Though, once I start writing about Vienna - I may). Today- I thought I would highlight our current favorite coffeehouses in Vienna. And I say current because there are many more throughout the city and some we really love - and some not so much - but for now - I am highlighting our favorites of the past two years.
There is a long tradition and culture around coffeehouses in Vienna. Coffeehouses began in the late 1600's and is still thriving today. According to the Vienna government website, the first coffeehouse was actually opened by an Armenian spy. (Want the full history - I think the government site - is a great little read). Overtime, all the greats (and the villains) of Austria have enjoyed their coffee in many of the houses that stand today.

Our current favorites:
Cafe Ritter: Shopping on Mariehilfstrasse. You walk right past this one!
Frauenhuber: Often overlooked, but the oldest coffeehouse in Vienna.

Others worth the visit:
Cafe Central: Tourist favorite. Often lines and expensive - however, it is an amazing building and the history is worth a one-time visit.
Café Hawelka: The son of the original owners still will great you when there. It is a classic! When Stephan was in college, the owners were still alive. I remember the wife on my first trip to Vienna with Stephan. When they were there - and they saw you were looking for a seat - you would be seated with a stranger whether you wanted it or not. The paintings in there are originals (mostly by the Vienna School of Fantastic realism) that were given by artists in the 60's and 70s.
Cafe Landtmann: Fancy treat, people watching and in the center of it. If you know who to look for - you might find a politician having a coffee there. Thus far, we only spotted two "influencers." The gluten free cakes are great. Siegmund Freud played card here.
Cafe Museum: Now owned by the same group that owns Cafe Landtmann, so you can get the same quality coffee and treats. This used to be a student hangout - ask Stephan - he spent most of his college years there. Unfortunately, the renovations, change to more upscale and joining the bigger Coffeehouse group - has made it too expensive for most students.
Cafe Sperl: Very authentic, low key place, with beautiful interior.

There are more to list - but those are the ones to start with and do yourself a favor - don't be tempted by the chains you maybe familiar with at home. Put down that paper cup and don't waste your Euros there! Do what the Viennese do, drink your coffee in a real coffeehouse. The experience is worth it and you will never want to drink a coffee without a glass of water and served on a silver tray again!
