Vienna - List of Suggestions
to suggest - vorschlagen

As written in the last Salzburg post, these are the suggestions that we often send in an email. Vienna is a special city for us. When Stephan graduated from high school he went off to Vienna. A few years later, he spent a year in NY and we met. We had an amazing year, followed by him having to return to Vienna to finish a degree. We lived a school year apart emailing and him calling from a pay phone across from where he lived. In the midst of that year we got married and spent half of our first year married in a long distance overseas relationship. (Yes, we are so old, that no texting or video chatting and we survived!) Fast forward 20+ years later - our oldest is headed to Vienna to start her own adventure.
In any case, we often send an email full of suggestions to folks - so I thought I would combine it. Here are some of our highlights to Vienna.

Museums:

- Belvedere: "The Kiss" by Schiele is like the Mona Lisa of Vienna
- The Hunderwasser Haus in the 3rd district is also great destination. Use the bathroom!
- Sammlung Leopold: A huge collection of Klimt and Schiele and their contemporaries. this is in the Museumquartier.
- Musuemquartier has lots of different museums (this is right off the Mariahilfer Strasse so you can go shopping or eat afterward)
- Albertina - My new favorite - I could go everytime.
- Globe Museum is a must and very small.
Miscellaneous:

- Mariahilfer Strasse (and the 7. district "Neubau") is a great place to shop. Probably the highest density with better prices than in the center of town.
- The first district (the center of town) is worth walking through and you might find interesting shopping there as well, but things like shoes etc, are a bit more expensive.
- Go the Rathausplatz (square before city hall). Usually in the summer, there is a big screen where they host movies, concerts. And lots of food vendors from all over!) And in the winter it is turned into Christmas Markets and ice skating rinks.
- The Prater (permanent amusement park) the ferris wheel it is a large wooden one and you sit in the cabin.
- Shönbrunn Palace - if you like zoos, the Schonbrunn zoo is the oldest in the Europe...
- Local Snacks - Ottakringer Beer and Manner Treats.
- Train tickets: Tickets can be bought at most train stations - but if you take the trams you will need to get the ticket at a train station or store. Tickets can usually be bought in stores called "Tabak Trafik" (they also sell cigarettes in those stores). Something important to know - week long tickets start on Sunday and end on Saturday vs. being seven days from when you bought it.
- Naschmarkt - this is a wonderful place to stroll through. Have some middle eastern food - just grab some hummus and falafel - you are near TU Wien at that point - so wonderful buildings nearby and Cafe Musuem is near if you want a coffee afterward.
- Visit the central cemetery and museum Yes, I know - but it is really something else. And yes, they have a museum. And yes, you can buy the cemetery Lego set there (zombies included!)
