The Albertina

Museum - Das Museum

The start of the year has been hectic and I looked back in my drafts and saw a few posts I never finished. So, I am going to be doing a few "throwback" posts to catch up.

New Year's Eve Day with spent with Stephan's cousins and aunt. We started the day at the Albertina. This is a museum in Vienna that I had never been to - so I was excited to see the space.  There was a special exhibit of Albrecht Dürer. Much of our time was spent there.

Albrecht Dürer

In addition to the special exhibit, we were able to see some of the art that was given as a gift by the Batliner family from Lichtenstein.  This private collection is filled with unique pieces that in my opinion, has put this Museum on the map. I know it was already there for others - but it is now for me. With so many incredible options in Vienna, it is really hard to choose, however  this has been added to my "go to" suggestions for friends and family. (And for the friend that is spending the summer with us, if you are reading this - yes, we will be visiting).

Wilhelm Thöny - New York

The fact that we could walk around for the day with family was wonderful. We parted was as evening was near. For us, we walked around a bit more to watch the NYE events starting up. We walked through much of the city that day. We made it to one of the central celebration areas. After a quick fix of music, we headed back to the apartment.

None of us are fireworks fans, though we must admit -watching them from the far far distance from our window was enjoyable.  The next day, the Viennese New Year's Concert is watched around the world. It is a lottery for tickets to watch from the inside. We were able to walk around the outside the day before as they were getting ready. In the states, it is usually the voice Julie Andrews that is detailing the concert highlights while dancers are streaming down the staircases and hallways.

One final note - it is sometimes what you find outside the museums and music halls that bring history and a smile.

For history, the composer Arnold Schönberg.

For the smile....
