Rats Jumping Ship
rat - die Ratte
The blog post that came out this morning was scheduled from last week and I had forgotten about it. With the state of the US - I would have never sent that post today. As an American living abroad - it is an unusual feeling to be so far away. Constant refreshes on the phone and monitoring of the news.
As the world watches, there is a knot in my throat that just can't clear. Anxiety that things are under control and there is no further coup attempts. I refuse to use the word disbelief - because it is not. And if Americans find themselves shocked - I think they need to look internally and make sure they are being truthful to themselves.
This has been stewing, brewing and fueled by the president and all his followers. From day 1 of his presidency (and before) there has been a method to his madness. Deflection, deceit, greed, hate, attacks on immigrants, people of color, women and religions other than Christianity. He led a campaign of hate and all those that voted and supported him - knew exactly what they were supporting.
As his family danced while watching the attempted coup, Senate aides saved the Electorial College ballots from being burned by the white supremacist terrorists. 70 Million people voted for this.
In the past two days we are seeing leaders, distancing themselves from one person. However, let us be clear - this is not brave, this is not in the interest of the country. This is just rats jumping the ship. They are trying to save themselves - either to protect their future careers or fear of legal ramifications.
The US has a lot of work to do to change, to be better and do more.
In looking at my blog posts ... even from the second to last - silver lining.
I cannot find any silver lining in a coup attempt. It is unforgivable and something the history books will need to keep.
However, as long as there are good people fighting for democracy, there is hope.
So, keep fighting.
