Parenting Fail

Parents - Die Eltern

Sometimes parents make mistakes and they don't realize until long afterward. Sometimes, they know deep down they probably will be making a mistake if they do something - but do it anyway. And sometimes, they make mistakes and know it from the start.

Stephan and I are far from perfect parents and have made many of mistakes - and a variety from the description above. Well, tonight was a parent fail that was epic and a mistake that we knew beforehand.

And if you are looking at the set design.... yes, even the bird......

In summary, Thursday was our 21st wedding anniversary. Stephan had bought tickets to the Tenacious D in concert not really noting the date. The show was near our apartment at a venue we had not been to yet. It was Samsung Hall in Düberdorf. We figured Miriam is on break so it would be a fun way to end the break.

How many of you have seen Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny? How many of you know their music? Well, you know the Jack Black - yeah - him - well for those that don't know - he is not only an actor (think the Holiday, School of Rock and Jumanji) but the lead musician to Tenacious D. The band has a cult following and last night we met all of Switzerland's followers. The second half of the set was the "old" songs.  We had great seats in the balcony and had the perfect view.  I am grateful we got seats this time and didn't full out make the mistake of having tickets for the standing room only and the mosh pit.  I also realize that we were probably four of about 10 that were not mega-fans.

Now the first half of the show - what do I say? Perhaps if I wasn't sitting with teens I would have laughed a little louder and taken it all for face value - two men having a fun time with their 13 year old boy-self memories, combining it with politics, humor and well - 13 year-old boy sex jokes but from 45+ year old experience and minds. The truth is they came up with a heavy metalish, rock opera-ish sex story about the apocalyptic future. uhmmm.. don't believe me - well, they are working on a graphic novel (graphic can be looked at in two ways) which should probably have a CD of songs to play along to get an idea. Still don't believe me? Check out their website tenaciousd.com and I warn you the movie is basically the show.

The opening act wasn't bad too- it was bluegrass, hardcore, country. Make sense? Yeah, I know. But, it was entertaining and I might even play their music around the house.

With that said, this mistake will be one that we will laugh about for a very long time - I am guessing it going in our "classic" mistake pile. We already have a few one liners we keep repeating. So if we are all laughing, had a fun (albeit raunchy and cringing all the time) evening - does that mean this was really a mistake?
