My Grandmother's Sofa

Sofa - Das Sofa

When moving here, we had to decide on what items we really needed/wanted to bring with us. That included what had sentimental value. Stephan insisted on my dad's bookshelf and the game table he got from his mother for his 30th birthday. Miriam wanted my mom's sewing machine and all her sewing tools. Klara wanted to make sure we brought some of the smaller items that she connected with home. I wanted my Grandma Rosie's sofa. It was the smallest of the older couches we had and my favorite.

When Stephan and I bought our first apartment together in NYC - the sofa had a prominent spot in the living room. It is the couch Klara sunk her first little teeth into. And it is the sofa that has traveled with us since. The only problem with the couch was it was old and uncomfortable.

See the little teeth marks?

So the year before we left, my friends Chris, Ivy and Megan and I reupholstered it! I loved the experience both because it was so rewarding in the end but also to do this project with my friends.

When we moved, I took the couch with us and it sat sideways in the cellar.  There was no space in the first apartment we moved to and the movers broke a leg.  Every time, I went into the cellar (which is often here -  it is really used as another room by many) I would see my sofa and just sigh with a bit of sadness.

When we moved to the new apartment, we had a wood furniture repair person take it away, fix the one foot and deliver it. It was the very first piece of furniture to find a new home and enter the apartment. And for the Sandy admirers, we decided they went well together.  Still needs curtains, but  this is one of my favorite spots to sit.
