München with Friends

Last week, Stephan and I had the opportunity to meet our dear friends Marian and Dan. They were in Munich for the week and able to carve some time out for us. Marian's mother was born in Munich, but had to escape due to the Nazi regime. The family was contacted by an art historian that was trying to return artifacts to Jewish families. The items were silver religious items like candlesticks and kiddish cups. In the process, connections and emotions were built. Some families received items that once belonged to their families, while some met old friends and relatives. The families were invited to Germany for a week of reunions, memories and connections. Stephan and I were fortunate to be able to see the opening remarks by politicians, consulates and most importantly survivors and members of their families. Marian's mom, Anne Marie Abernathy at 95 years old told stories that touched everyone in the room.

Afterward the opening, a commemorative plaque for her family members were placed as a permanent reminder of what happened to remind us all:

Never Again
