Konstanz

Konstanz - Constance

Two weeks ago my mother-in-law came to visit for five days. (Danke Mom!) It was great to have her here. In addition to showing her my favorite coffee house (Babu's) we got to spend a few days just relaxing. And on Friday, Stephan and I hopped a train to Konstanz, Germany for the weekend and left K, M and Oma for their "girls weekend."

Konstanz is located on .... Lake Constance (Konstanzsee). Lake Constance consists of three bodies of water that merge and Austria, Germany and Switzerland all touch.

Konstanz is a beautiful university town on the Swiss/German boarder. What makes it particularly interesting, during WWII it was not bombed so the stock of old buildings is incredible. The story I have heard was that since the border is not a straight line, it was not possible to detect if the town was in Germany or Switzerland during the war from the air. When the ally troops were bombing other towns, this town did the opposite of what it was suppose to do. As they heard planes, they turned all their lights on to make it look like a Swiss town, so the planes would leave them unharmed.

Interesting, tense, conflicted, beautiful, modern  - Konstanz is a unique town and a quick train ride away. It is a filled with unique shops and a diverse community. The waterfront is beautiful and you can walk from one country to the next.   The different foods are amazing - from Turkish to Greek, and political to posh.

Enjoying Turkish food at Sedir

Restaurants to suggest:

Akropolis - Greek food worth the visit.

Ikram's Restaurant - Lebanese food that was delish!

Sedir's Restaurant - Great Turkish food and the owner is lovely.

Das Vogelhaus - Teahouse with politics on the it's sleeve.
