Family Time
family - die Familie
When I think back on my childhood and the good times with cousins there are several that come to mind. Growing up as an only child and a small family in general - I really only had a handful of cousins my age. I have been fortunate that I have been able to stay in touch with those cousins.
Two of them live in Germany, so that was an added bonus to moving overseas.
One of those cousins and partner, popped in early on when we were all still getting adjusted and were standing in front of him with bewildered eyes. Their brief visit over brunch filled not only our bellies, but our souls.
My other cousin and his family came for a long weekend in November. The fact that he and his family came to visit us meant the world.
And what exciting things and activities did we do? Not much and that is what made it so great. We did a lot of cooking together, drinking coffee, and walking through the city. Already have a fall plan to visit them but maybe - maybe there is a chance to connect somewhere halfway beforehand.
And one surprise in this move - I found out I had a cousin that lived outside of Zürich. Her mother and my father were first cousins. It was really lovely getting to spend a day in August with her - visiting the nearby city of Winterthur. I am hoping that upon her return from her "winter retreat" and my "overseas trip" we will connect again - we have a few years of family talk to catch up on.
As for Stephan - well it has been a long time since he has been so close to his side of the family. The first weekend he moved into our apartment his folks came to help him set up. And liked mentioned in previous posts, the girls have been to my in-laws for visits and my mother-in-law came for a visit in November. And they were part of the mere 100ish (might be exaggerating but can't be sure) Altmüller family members at the wedding in September.
New Year's Eve day was filled with more of Stephan's first cousins and aunt. We sat across from that at the wedding and I watched Stephan go right back into the family fold - it felt good. And so when we were in Vienna we all were together.
We really have been having a wonderful time reconnecting with family. We already have plans for February and March for more family time in Salzburg and Innsbruck. And while I am away with K, my mother-in-law already coordinated calendars with me to keep our Stephan and M entertained now and then. :)
Time together is the greatest gift out there.
